Handcrafted beer, delicious food, live music, and a great outdoor space!
In Putnam County, we have so many great locally owned eateries, and we love to share the stories and people behind them so that we can give the public a chance to see what we see. In this post, we’ll be spotlighting Wasser Brewing Co., a local brewery and restaurant right in the heart of downtown Greencastle. Needless to say, we’re excited to rave about it!
Wasser Brewing Company first graced our community with its presence in 2016 and we haven’t looked back since! A local, family-owned craft brewery and brewpub, it’s located a block from the square and within walking distance of the DePauw campus. While it is especially known for its beer, there are a lot of things about this place that make a visit worthwhile. To start, the building itself is a main attraction. The restaurant’s owners bought the building in 2015 and have gone through the extensive process of renovating it. Prior to being a brewery, the building was a Napa Auto Parts store, and before that, it was a Packard car dealership. Needless to say, there is no shortage of history and character, and the founder and head brewer, Chris Weeks, was sure to salvage and highlight that character in the renovation process. The unique drive-thru area of the building was converted into a deck offering outdoor seating and the perfect spot to sip a cold drink.
On the inside, original trusses are complemented by locally-made wood tables and a neat bar top. Since opening, Chris has installed a commercial brewery and has expanded the food offerings. Yum! More recently, the focus has been put on improving the spot as a venue for local musicians. This place has it all, and while the atmosphere is a main draw, the food is just as impressive. Most notably, Wasser Brewing Company donates 2% of its profits to Wasser Foundation, which provides grants for quality education programs. A former teacher himself, Chris wanted to give back to education, and he’s doing so through this Two Percent for Teachers program. Need another reason to visit? We didn’t think so.
While we can rave all about it online, you’re going to have to visit for yourself to see exactly what we mean. We recommend going on a nice evening when you can sit on the patio under the string lights and listen to live music, but really any day and time would be worthy. The food is on the grill and Chris is waiting to serve you his latest concoction, so what are you waiting for?!
