About Putnam County

Put Yourself in Our Place!

With more land in protected nature preserves than any other in Indiana, Putnam County is ideal for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, star gazers, and plant lovers.

Enjoy a wagon ride to greet nearly 100 elk on a 240-acre farm, visit one of the largest orchid growers in the Midwest and THE largest equestrian arena. Forty 19th century covered bridges dot the countryside and dozens of downtown Greencastle restaurants offer expansive and unique local food and drink, nestled along tree-lined streets with awesome boutique shopping, candy stores and ice cream. It’s all walkable to DePauw University, with its Peeler Arts Center and Green Performing Arts Center and an incredible, wooded campus dating to the 1830s.

Music is everywhere, from DePauw to its Music on the Square, to the Greencastle Summer Music Festival, two different weekly series all summer, a summer music festival, and bands performing in pubs and eateries year-round.

Historic architecture is everywhere, and four historic districts highlight it, and People Pathways walks/runs/cycles you through it. Great B&Bs, smart and funny innkeepers, second-story lofts, inviting campgrounds, and family-friendly hotels abound.

Put Yourself In Putnam County, and Put your feet up, Put your hands together, or Put on your thinking cap. For sure, you’ll enjoy Putting yourself in our place.
