Get Buried 2023

April 8, 2023 8:00am - 12:00pm
Yet another cycling event happening here in Putnam County, Get Buried is a less formal ride than Pedal Putnam and the Dust Bowl 100 but still gives riders a serious challenge.
No entry fee, an informal start, and a very welcoming and inclusive group make this ride great for beginners and seasoned veterans. Hosted by the Greencastle Cycling Club and managed by member and local cyclist, Wes Kendall, the ride is a great test for your early season conditioning.
The group meets at Starbucks at 8:30 a.m. on the morning of the ride to prepare, if you have questions before then contact us at ( There is a 30-mile and a 45-mile option, you can read Wes’ description of the course below:
Meaner, rougher, and deadlier, Get Buried returns in 2023 with an even gnarlier course, featuring more climbing, new roads, and loads of hidden cemeteries. Heading out West Walnut, this year’s course will take you right up Irwin Bridge as the field immediately thins out before dipping back down into Putnam County’s premier western gravel. A quick trip through little ol’ Vivalia (pop. 2) will lead you to Groundhog Falls before heading all the way out to Fallen Rock Road and some tricky turns. Vinzant Road will guide you back to the SAG stop for the first time before heading back out to West Walnut Road. Coming back to town, the race will really get going up Long Branch Climb. At the top, riders will have one last chance to stock up on water or food before tackling the always-tough 800 West Gravel AND the notorious Washout Climb. After that, it’s up the Fern Cliff TT segment, down Kendall hill, and just past Houck Covered Bridge before entering the event’s namesake: The Boone Hutcheson Cemetery, home to one of Putnam County’s finest views. Not that you’ll have time to enjoy it. From there, you’ll have to push it home, up the final climbs of gravel, through the barriers at Oakalla Covered Bridge, along Big Walnut Creek, and up West Walnut Street one more time before turning for home at the 50 yard line of Blackstock Stadium.
