Monthly Hiking Tour

July 9, 2022 9:00am - 10:00am

Putnam Parks & Pathways will begin hosting a Monthly Hiking Tour Series that will highlight a variety of local trails, nature preserves, and parks. Guided by a professional in their field, each hike will consist of learning about some type of wildlife, native plant, or other nature-oriented discussions.

We hoped the Hike would visit the Sunflower plantings which are usually in full bloom. Because of the wet Spring the sunflowers are not blooming. We will hike to the plantings and return to the pond to discuss what a Fish and Wildlife Area offers to a variety of nature lovers. To get to the area turn north off of 40 by the Putnamville State Farm. After entering the Wildlife area drive north to the pond.

Possession of the land that comprises Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area (FWA) began in 2010 with a transfer of 1,962 acres from the Putnamville Correctional Facility to the DNR, Division of Fish & Wildlife. After 2010, several more parcels were added to Deer Creek, bringing the current total to 2,175 acres. A 4-acre pond ps on the north portion.

Deer Creek Fish and Wildlife Area, near Putnamville features excellent hunting, fishing, and hiking over rolling agricultural land and mature oak-hickory woods. An upland and forested habitat, shallow impoundments, and Deer Creek attract a wide variety of birds and wildlife in addition, wild berries, nuts, and spring and fall mushrooms may be gathered at times that don’t conflict with turkey hunting season. Hunting season in the fall limits access to the area.

This event will be held at Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area.
