The Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts is home to the DePauw School of Music and DePauw Theatre. It plays host to weekly performances, recitals and lectures open to guests to enjoy and includes acoustically isolated faculty studios and practice rooms, technologically “smart” classrooms, superb ensemble rehearsal spaces, a technology center, a recording studio, a comprehensive music library, and three performance halls – Kresge Auditorium, Moore Theatre and Thompson Recital Hall.
The Green Center is in the heart of the DePauw campus, with free parking to the south and west. The main entrance, with the box office just inside, is easy to spot, facing Indiana Street.
DePauw Theatre typically offers three plays throughout the school year. The Performing Arts Series adds another half-dozen performances by internationally acclaimed musicians, and DePauw’s Film Studies Film Series adds another half-dozen events, screening thought-provoking, critically acclaimed films. ArtsFest is DePauw’s annual celebration of the arts, showcasing the artistic talents of students, faculty, staff, visiting guests, and local residents.
The School of Music is perhaps the Crown Jewel of the Green Center, offering the Green Guest Artist Series, a season full of renowned performers from around the world; opera and musical productions; artists-in-residence; and Music of the 21st Century, an annual guest residency that brings some of the world’s most outstanding composers to DePauw.
The School’s community programs include the Youth String Program, which has provided nearly 500 fourth grade students with free violin lessons. The middle school jazz program provides sixth-through-eighth-graders with the opportunity to explore their creativity by learning to improvise and perform in a jazz band. The Community Music Program sees DePauw faculty and music students providing 14 individual lessons each semester in strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, piano, organ, and voice. All of these result in recitals and performances at the Green Center or downtown at Music on the Square, on Greencastle’s Courthouse Square.
Many events have free admission. Nearly all are free to all students and seniors. Online tickets, whether free or purchased, are required for most performances.
